Tap into the “happiness mindset” with an exclusive excerpt from 12 Words.
What is it you have been telling yourself that you need to do, or be, in order to be happy? Maybe it is a relationship, a job, a home, or a family. Whatever it is, write it down. Then look at your list. How do you feel when you read it? Do you really want to give your power of happiness to these things or people? I trust by now you are saying no.
What I urge you to remember is that you can still want and have all the things on your list, but you don’t need to make your happiness dependent on them. Let’s look at how you can bring that awareness into play.
Sometimes you may not recognize the language you use in your daily conversations and how it can adversely affect your state of mind. For example, you may catch yourself thinking or saying, “If only . . . X would happen, then I’d be happy.” When you do this, stop, take a breath, and say to yourself, “No, I choose to be happy anyway.”
Notice where you are putting your emotional focus; is it on the lack of things you are striving for or on the presence of all the things you have in your life already? I know it sounds simple, but, in my experience, this is a choice. And when we flip from lack-consciousness to presence-consciousness, we immediately raise our happiness thermostat.
Your emotions are like the GPS for your soul; their primary function is to help you travel from where you are to wherever you want to be. Happiness is a perfect example of this. Imagine waking up in the morning and feeling good no matter what—holding yourself fully and deeply in a place of joy and happiness . .
