Confident Creative by Cat Bennett

"The Confident Creative" shows how the practice of drawing can unblock creativity and create confidence. Drawing brings us fully into the present moment where we connect with peace when we open to inspiration and creativity. Through the yogic technique of one-pointed focus, observing the mind and changing our energy to the positive, we learn to overcome creative blocks with ease and make quantum leaps in our art and lives.

Other drawing books focus on the end product, this one focuses on how drawing can bring us into our true creative selves. "The Confident Creative" offers a wealth of visual inspiration through many examples of art from professional artists who have pushed the boundaries of drawing into creative expression. These examples are in colour and will provide ideas for artistic exploration for practicing artists as well as beginners.

Most drawing books are concerned with making literal observational drawings and not with creativity. The art in these books, mostly in black and white, reflects the principle goal of drawing in a realistic way. "The Confident Creative" takes drawing into the realm of personal exploration and expression.

"The Confident Creative" offers specific techniques for going deeper into creative expression through drawing. It shows how to draw in 3 different ways-Making Marks (to explore free and symbolic expression); Drawing What We See; and Drawing From Imagination. Most drawing books focus only on drawing what we see and do not go into the realm of creative expression- which is where we make art.

"The New Drawing on the Right Hand Side of the Brain", a popular book first written by Betty Edwards thirty years ago and still selling, shows us how we must leave the verbal and analytical left-brain and enter the feeling, intuitive right brain to learn to make accurate observational drawings. She believes that drawing with accuracy is necessary for the artist. The end result of her programme is that people all learn to draw in much the same realistic way.

"The Confident Creative" builds on Edwards' valuable contribution by taking drawing into the realm of creative exploration and also offers specific techniques for overcoming the obstacles in the mind that interfere with authentic creative expression. The "Artist's Way / A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity", by Julia Cameron, has sold over three million copies and offers advice to those who might wish to do creative work and to artists who are stuck in their creative development. While Cameron's book is intended for artists in all disciplines, its focus is on writing.

"The Confident Creative" shows how the direct experience of playful drawing can take us into the meditative state where we access both peace and creativity, whether or not we are artists. "The Confident Creative" offers different techniques for overcoming creative blocks, many based on yoga.
